Can you believe that I need to pay to buy curry leaves at my place. The flavorful leaves which once we got free when buying vegetables from the market is Re.1 per bunch. But what dish will be yummy and aromatic without adding curry leaves, so left with no other option but to buy some, I got a big bunch of curry leaves. Due to increasing temperatures, the leaves started drying. I didn't want to waste them and hence was asking ideas to the huss on what to make out of the whole lot. He came up with "Why not try karuveppilai podi? U can use it many ways, side dish for idlis /dosas, karuveppilai saadam, or you can even add in dishes to enhance the flavor." I tried it with a small batch and now am on my way to make a bigger one ;)
Curry Leaves - 1 cup(packed)
Urad dal - 1/8 cup
Channa dal - 1 tbsp
Dry red chilli - 2
Garlic - 1 clove
Salt - to taste
How I Made it:
Wash curry leaves to remove dirt and dry them completely. Dry roast curry leaves till they are crisp and you get a nice aroma. Alternatively you can allow it to dry under shade for 4-5 days. Next dry roast channa dal, urad dal and dry red chilli till golden brown. Remove and allow to cool. Roast garlic also.
In a mixie, first add curry leaves and grind for 2 mins followed by remaining ingredients and grind to a coarse powder. Add salt and chopped garlic. Continue grinding till well combined. Store it in air tight container.
Serve with idly/dosa or make flavorful karuveppilai saadam.

:) thats a good idea... atleast u get to buy it there, Vimitha...In this corner, people have no idea that there is something called curry leaves in the universe...phew... all my cooking here in Cairo are without curry leaves.. (just imagine our south Indian cooking without the main ingredient...)
ReplyDeletewow....that is amazing dear......very informative post...
ReplyDeletethis is a good idea to make powder and to store the leaves.
ReplyDeleteFlavorful and delicious...
ReplyDeleteAtleast we get it in India for 1,2 or 3 Rs a bunch. We used to buy it in UK for 1 pound a bunch..hows that..and i used to store that in fridge like a treasure :-)
ReplyDeleteHere at the farmer's market they are not giving curry leaves unless you pay at least 5 rupees. They are saying that they themselves are buying it for 40 rupees a kilo or something like that. I bought some curry leaves powder recently, but i am sure making at home gives the best taste and aroma.
ReplyDeleteMy mom use to make me for me and my sis..Nice preparation .. :) Healthy podi!!
ReplyDeleteLong long ago so long ago i had this...My grandmom used to make this for us w/o garlic...yours sound so good...I cannot imagine curryleaves podi, kuzhambu since nearly about 2-3 sprigs costs $1.99 only :( n that also not available for all the time...Miss INDIA :(
ReplyDeleteYaah ,I truly go with Sangee..Paying in dllars for curry leaves is much more paining, the ones at home used to be fresh and just plucked from the garden but here even the dried ones are so costly..
ReplyDeleteThis looks a flavorful podi and a great preserve!!
